Late rally not enough as 'Dores fall to UK, 2-1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Gena Inbusch’s goal in the 85th minute wasn’t enough as the Vanderbilt soccer team fell to Kentucky, 2-1, Sunday at the VU Soccer Complex.

Vanderbilt falls to 3-7-3 (0-4-1 SEC) with the loss to the Wildcats. Kentucky improves to 10-2-1 (3-1-0 SEC).

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead, scoring two goals within the first four minutes of play.

Zoe Swift scored the first of the night for UK on the assist from Stuart Pope. Kentucky’s second goal of the night came when Swift sent a one-touch pass off a shot to Arin Gilliland, who slid and sent the ball past the diving keeper for the two goal advantage.

Despite the early deficit the Commodores held strong and went toe-to-toe with the Wildcats in a very physical game.

Vanderbilt was able to get on the board in the 85th minute, when it seemed the game was fading away. Simone Charley sent a great crossing pass into the box to Inbusch who then ripped it past the keeper from eight yards out to cut the UK lead to one.

The ‘Dores would threaten to tie the game shortly after. With just a few minutes remaining in the contest and the momentum appearing to be with Vandy, Lauren Hart sent a corner kick just over the head of the leaping Charley.

Kentucky was able to clear the ball out and escape with the win, holding off the late Vanderbilt attack.

Shannon Morrish made her first start of the season in net for the Commodores. The redshirt sophomore made seven saves, including two big-time saves to keep the game within reach.

The Commodores will be on the road next weekend when they travel to Oxford for a contest with Ole Miss (Oct. 11). From there it will be back home for two against Arkansas and Mississippi State on October 18 and 20.
