Harwell Earns All-SEC Honor

Vanderbilt fifth-year senior named first team

NASHVILLE, Tenn. โ€” After hitting the century mark in singles play this season, fifth-year senior George Harwell was named to first team All-SEC, as announced by the league office Friday.

This is Harwellโ€™s second All-SEC honor and first career first team selection. He was named to the second team in 2021 and the All-Freshman Team in 2018. The Nashville native is the first Commodore named to the first team since Cameron Klinger and Daniel Valent in 2018.

One of Vanderbiltโ€™s senior leaders and a mainstay at No. 1 singles, Harwell reached the 100-win milestone in singles play this season and has earned 171 combined singles and doubles victories in his Vanderbilt career.

Out of 20 singles wins on the season, he defeated five-ranked foes, including three conference victories, highlighted by a 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (4) victory over No. 8 Liam Draxl of Kentucky, who was No. 94 on March 25 and the preseason No. 1 and 2021 NCAA singles semifinalist. Harwell also had a historic Senior Day on April 10 against in-state rival and top-five Tennessee, reaching the century mark after a 7-6 (6), 6-2 win over top-three Adam Walton, who was ranked No. 14 at the time. He achieved a career-best singles ranking at No. 26 on Feb. 9 and sits at No. 33 in the latest ITA singles rankings.

In doubles, Harwell played at the No. 2 spot the entire season after clinching four opening points and posting two-ranked wins. Alongside fifth-year senior Max Freeman for most of the campaign, the pair earned a 6-2 SEC victory over Arkansas sophomore duo Adrien Burdet and Melvin Manuel, ranked No. 47 on March 6. The win propelled Vandy to its first SEC win since March 6, 2020, and first in Fayetteville, Arkansas since March 14, 2019.

The NCAA Tournament team field will be announced Monday at 5 p.m., while the individual field will be released the following day. Both announcements will be available on NCAA.com.
