Garraud Gives Back

Graduate transfer is Vandy’s representative on SEC Community Service Team

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt women’s basketball student-athlete Marnelle Garraud was selected to the 2023 SEC Women’s Basketball Community Service Team it was announced by the league office on Wednesday.

In her first season with the program, Garraud has contributed to several of the Commodores’ community service efforts throughout the year. She has visited on numerous occasions with students at Eakin Elementary School, providing a mentor and leadership to underprivileged children, and has also helped support Next Steps at Vanderbilt, a four-year inclusive higher education program committed to providing neurodiverse students an inclusive, transformational postsecondary education in academics, social and career development, and independent living, while honoring equality, compassion, and excellence in all endeavors. Garraud has also supported the Mother to Mother organization, which helps low-income families thrive by providing essential resources so that under-resourced children in the Nashville community can be safe and healthy.

Garraud has been active within Vanderbilt’s graduate program helping provide support and information to prospective students since arriving on campus last summer as well.

Voted to the Atlantic Coast Conference’s All-Defensive Team in 2021, she was also named to the league’s All-Academic Team that season prior to joining the Commodore program. So far this season Garraud has scored in double figures a team-leading 22 times (in 28 contests) highlighted by scoring a career-best 31 points first in a December win at Louisiana Tech and then again a month later at Arkansas. She has led Vandy in scoring 10 times, steals in eight games, assists on seven occasions and blocks five times entering the final weeks of the season.

The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all 21 league sponsored sports. The Community Service Team highlights an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts.

The Commodores begin the final week of the regular season with a match-up against No. 5/4 LSU at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in their last home game of the regular season.
