Hawkins named to AAC Honor Roll

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Gabby Fornia headlined the weekly conference awards as the American Athletic Conference Attacker of the Week, the league announced Monday. Melissa Hawkins was also tabbed to the AAC weekly Honor Roll.

Fornia led the Commodores to a season-opening victory over Wagner 14-11. She led the Commodores in goals (4) and tied for the lead in assists (3).

Fornia scored twice on free position shots and also scored twice more, including the game’s final goal. After setting a Vanderbilt record with assists last season (36), she opened the 2020 campaign right where she picked off.

The junior attacker registered her first assist of the season in the first half and then twice assisted freshman Mikela McCauley on second half goals.

Melissa Hawkins continues to be a strong defensive presence for the Commodores after an impressive sophomore season. She set a career high Sunday with five caused turnovers against Wagner.

She also scooped up two ground balls and helped Vanderbilt hold Wagner scoreless for the final six minutes of the game.

The Commodores continue the 2020 season with a road tilt against No. 5 Boston College. Sunday’s matchup is set for 11 a.m. CT.
