Staff earns SEC’s first Freshman of the Week honor of 2021

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Earning the SEC’s first weekly honor of the season Thursday, Vanderbilt’s Holly Staff has been named the conference’s Freshman of the Week.

One of Vanderbilt’s top three singles players in every match thus far, Staff owns a perfect 6-0 record across singles and doubles to date this spring. After a strong fall campaign, Staff has continued to dominate the competition in losing just two of 20 games in doubles at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles while finding every which way to win in singles twice at No. 2 and once at No. 3.

While winning the opener handedly, Staff battled back from a first-set deficit to earn yet another a come-from-behind win against MTSU’s Lidia Burrows while battling through a tiebreaker against Laura Bente of Memphis to help the Commodores to a 17-1 singles mark this month and an 8-1 doubles ledger.

Vanderbilt will return to the courts this weekend to battle Miami at 11 a.m. Saturday.
