'Dores fall to No. 9 Texas A&M

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Ninth-ranked Texas A&M rode a pair of early goals to a 4-0 victory over the home standing Vanderbilt women’s soccer team Sunday at the VU Soccer Complex.

The Aggies scored in the game’s first minute when Annie Kunz connected from a sharp angle just 54 seconds into the game. Less than five minutes later, Beth West took a Lindsey Witz pass and gave Texas A&M a 2-0 advantage.

In the ninth minute of the game, Vanderbilt redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Levick was forced out of the game with an injury. Freshman Shannon Morrish totaled nearly 82 minutes in just her second career appearance. Morrish made four saves in the contest, including a point-blank save in the second half.

Kunz would net her second of the game on a header off a Jayne Eadie free kick from 35 yards out. A&M’s fourth goal came in the second half, with Leigh Edwards striking a ball from 22 yards out that made its way in despite a deflection by Morrish.

Vanderbilt’s best chance came in the 58th minute. Freshman Lauren Hart’s corner was headed by classmate Kelsey Tillman, but A&M keeper Jordan Day deflected the shot away. The rebound fell to sophomore Cherrelle Jarrett, but her shot from inside the six was blocked.

In the 85th minute, freshman Keegan Thimons had another good look for the Commodores, but her effort from just outside the 18-yard box went just wide. Eleven different players took shots for the Aggies, with eight of their 19 attempts going on frame.

With three games remaining in the 2012 regular season, the Commodores stand in ninth place in the SEC. The league’s top 10 teams will head to Orange Beach, Ala., in two weeks for the 2012 SEC Tournament.

The Commodores will play host to Auburn on Friday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. CT. The Tigers currently stand in a tie for sixth place in the conference, five points ahead of the Commodores. Auburn dropped a 1-0 decision at Arkansas today.
