Vandy knocks off No. 10 Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Peyton Cutshall delivered the golden goal in overtime to give the Vanderbilt soccer team a 2-1 victory over No. 10 Tennessee on Thursday night at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex.

In what was the final home game of the season, Vanderbilt (7-7-2, 4-3-1 SEC) earned its first win over a ranked opponent this season. The loss for the Volunteers (13-2-0, 6-2-0 SEC) was just their second of the season.

“I’m just ecstatic for our seniors and this younger group that is learning how to win at this level,” Vanderbilt head coach Darren Ambrose said. “They’ve worked so hard. They’ve never stopped, and I feel like tonight was a reward for all of them.”

Vanderbilt struck first in the 14th minute when Amber Nguyen ripped a free kick from 19 yards out that was saved, but Abi Brighton knocked in the rebound for the lead.

In the 38th minute, Kate Devine made a save on a Tennessee breakaway to keep the Volunteers off the scoreboard.

The Dores took the 1-0 lead into the halftime intermission despite being outshot by an 11-2 margin through 45 minutes. Devine was called upon to make four saves in the opening half.

The score remained 1-0 until the 49th minute as Tennessee found the equalizer when Mackenzie George gathered a bouncing ball and scored from 12 yards out.

Devine made a number of spectacular saves throughout regulation, tallying five in the second half to help push the game to overtime.

With the game in overtime, Vanderbilt’s golden goal was started when Tina Bruni threw the ball into Raegan Kelley’s feet. Kelley floated a cross into the box where Cutshall hammered home a header from eight yards out to win the game.

Devine ended the night with a career-high nine saves for Vandy.

Next on the schedule the Commodores will head to Texas A&M for a Sunday showdown.
