OXFORD, Miss. – The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team gave up a goal in the seventh minute and went on to lose, 3-0, at Ole Miss Thursday.
After the Commodores opened the game with two shots in the first five minutes, the Rebels scored on their first shot of the game at the 6:57 mark. Kendyl Mygatt centered a ball to Dylan Jordan, who volleyed it past a diving Brittanie Barbero.
In the 28th minute, the Rebels extended their lead to 2-0 when Alix Hildal scored, assisted by Mandy McCalla. Ole Miss held a 7-2 advantage in shots in the first half.
Vanderbilt pushed numbers forward in the second half, producing 12 shots but also giving up some dangerous counterattacks. Meredith Snow notched Ole Miss’ third goal in the 64th minute on a rocket from outside the penalty area.
The Commodores had a number of chances late. A header by Kate Goldin in the 72nd minute was barely tipped over the crossbar by OM goalkeeper Kelly McCormick, who made five saves on the evening. Still fighting into the 89th minute, the Commodores hit the crossbar with their 14th and final shot of the game.
Thursday’s loss keeps Vanderbilt a tie for 10th place in the Southeastern Conference. A victory by Alabama over Tennessee gave the Crimson Tide possession of the eighth SEC Tournament slot for the time being.
Vanderbilt returns home and will play host to Mississippi State on Sunday, Oct. 23, at 2 p.m CT.
