Commodores in Cabo

Vandy continues West Coast swing in Mexico

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Fresh off a championship run at The Prestige on Wednesday, Vanderbilt turns right around to begin play Sunday at the Cabo Collegiate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The Commodores shot a blistering 14-under-par Wednesday in La Quinta, California, to win The Prestige by 10 shots over Oregon. They’ll hope to keep that positive vibes rolling while on international soil.

“We are thrilled to be back at the Cabo Collegiate and playing in one of the very best tournaments in college golf,” Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh said. “It’s another great opportunity for our team to take a step toward being the team we know we can be. I thought we took a great step last week and hopefully we can carry that momentum into this week.”

Vanderbilt will have the same lineup as it did for The Prestige with Reid Davenport, Cole Sherwood, Gordon Sargent, Matthew Riedel and Jackson Van Paris wearing the black and gold. That quintet will try to manage the Cabo del Sol Cove Club Course which will play at a par 71 over 6,807 yards.

Vandy will be joined this week by Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, California, Florida State, Houston, Mississippi, Oklahoma State, Rice, Stanford, Tennessee and Texas Tech. The tournament officially begins with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. CT Sunday and resumes with a 10 a.m. CT shotgun start Monday for the second round.

Monday’s final round will also begin with a 10 a.m. CT shotgun start.

“Any time you have success, it’s easy to lose a little focus,” Limbaugh said. “So I think the challenge for the coaches and players will be to get locked back in and to keep the right focus on the right and meaningful things. Great competitors find a way, play with pride and grit. That’s always been the standard that we have to attain here and that certainly hasn’t changed.

“We will need to have the same competitive character we showed last week by continuing to overcome adversity while having some fun.”
