Commodores fall to Missouri on the road, 2-0

COLUMBIA, Mo. – A goal in the first minute was too much to overcome for the Vanderbilt soccer team on the road.

The Commodores suffered a 2-0 loss to Missouri on Sunday afternoon for their third straight loss. Vanderbilt (5-7-1, 0-4-1 SEC) surrendered a goal just 24 seconds in to the game, it was the first time all season the team has given up a first-half goal. Missouri tacked on a goal in the 57th minute for insurance. Vanderbilt has gone four straight games without scoring, last notching a goal in the seventh minute against Georgia on Sept. 21.

Vanderbilt mustered eight shots, including five that were on goal. Sophomore Sasha Gray led the way with three shots, including two shots on goal. Arkansas (9-2-2, 4-1) fired off 17 shots as Vanderbilt goalkeeper Christiana Ogunsami made seven saves. The freshman leads the SEC with 69 saves.

“Missouri is very good going forward and we knew that,” Vanderbilt coach Derek Greene said. “We battled hard and played well, but give Missouri credit for finishing their chances. We didn’t give them much and were solid along the back line today. I think the stats are a bit misleading in that we had the ball for good stretches in the game, but ultimately we need to get the ball in the back of the net again. I am proud of the effort, but not the end result. We gave them the first goal early on and could have let down the road against a quality team, but we didn’t.”

The Commodores head home to host No. 9 Texas A&M at 6 p.m. on Friday in a game televised on the SEC Network.
