<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Nashville — The Vanderbilt women’s soccer team playing in its first NCAA tournament since 1998 lost by a one-goal edge to in PKs to Samford after the game was still tied 1-1 through two overtime periods. Samford (15-3-4) will face No. 4 seed Pepperdine (14-3-3), a 1-0 winner over Ole Miss (15-4-2) in the first game, on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the VU Soccer Complex.

After a goal by each team in the final minutes of the first half, Samford outlasted an 18-1 barrage of Commodore (16-3-3) shots through the next three periods to reach PKs. The Bulldogs took a slight edge when junior defender Monica Buff’s (Lilburn, Ga.) shot was saved by freshman Cayley Winters. Buff, a Second Team All-SEC honoree, was the third shooter for the Commodores in the best-of-five line-up.

The Bulldogs punched their ticket to the second round in their first-ever tournament appearance when senior forward Marian Wagner stuck the ball just past the a sprawling Tyler Griffin (Charlotte, N.C.), the VU junior goalkeeper.

Wagner had an impressive night, scoring the first goal of the match at the 41:58 mark. It was her 26th career goal, putting her in first-place all time in Samford history. The goal also ended a school-record-setting streak by Griffin of 559 scoreless minutes. Her own previous record of 549 minutes began the last time the Commodores faced Samford and the Bulldogs’ Kim Matthews scored at the 19:00 minute mark. That goal in turn had ended Griffin’s first record of the season, of 515 minutes.

The Commodores, who are hosting the first two rounds of the Women’s College Cup at the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex, had a disappointing finish to one of the most successful seasons in program history. Since the game reflects a tie in the Commodores’ record, the team actually finished with its best winning percentage of all time at .795. The previous mark was set by the 1994 team that went 18-5 (.783) en route to a Sweet 16 berth.

With just over three minutes remaining in the half, VU tried desperately to even the score and go to the locker room with some momentum. Freshman midfielder Katie Schulz (Peachtree City, Ga.) did just that when she belted an unassisted goal from 20-yards out to tie the game with a 1:22 left in the half. It was first career goal for Schulz whose play all season earned her SEC All-Freshman Team and SEC All-Tournament honors.

Despite the outcome Vanderbilt dominated much of the gameplay, with a 26-4 shot advantage and 10-2 corner kick edge.
