CINCINNATI – Vanderbilt fell on the road against Cincinnati, 18-15, on Saturday afternoon at Gettler Stadium.

The Commodores (10-4, 2-2) cut a late deficit to two goals with five minutes remaining in the second half before the Bearcats (10-5, 4-0) sparked a three-goal run to put the game out of reach.

The Commodores outscored the Bearcats in the second half, but they weren’t able to overcome the first-half deficit.

Sophie Furlong led the Vanderbilt offensive attack as she scored five goals for the second straight game. It’s the fourth time this season she has scored five goals in a game.

Furlong, who entered Saturday second in the country in shot percentage, scored all her goals on just six shots.

Gabby Fornia continued to the serve as the main Commodore facilitator with four assists and one goal.

It was a game of runs as both teams traded 4-0 runs in the first half with the Bearcats ending the half to take a 9-5 lead into the break.

Emily Mathewson kicked off the scoring for the Commodores to tie it up at one-all early in the first half. She also added two more goals in the second half for the hat trick.

Melanie Becker, Karlie Bucci and Maddie Souza each scored one goal apiece for the Commodores.

Maddie Souza, the reigning AAC Freshman of the Week, delivered her second straight hat trick this season with three goals. She also added two assists for a career-high five points.
